One side of the Anchor pub on Anchor Hill date is 1884.

This was once the village Square.

All that old and well accustomed PUBLIC HOUSE known by the sign of the ANCHOR at Wivenhoe, together with the granary, coach house,stables and blacksmith shop.

The premises have been lately thoroughly repaired, and are now let at a very easy rent.

What a great place to live if you are of an Artistic bent

A couple of local artists who moved to Wivenhoe in the 1950's, they are Gail and Roy Cross, Roy taught art to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Wivenhoe turned in to an artistic colony in the next 20 years.One other was Richard Chopping who designed the  dust covers for the James Bond books.

Plotlands

Another Plotlands. Set in the 1920's.

I didn't get a part in the film.

Langton picture palace,alias Anchor Hill Wivenhoe. This was the set for a series called Plotlands which was filmed in Wivenhoe in 1996, staring Saskia Reeves and written by Jeremy Brock.
 It was also filmed in Cooks Yard.

They would have no problem filling it these days.

The Cage on Anchor hill, this was used for locking up drunks and vagrants up until the beginning of the 1900's, when it fell into disrepair, there were also stocks and a pillory. Behind it can be seen the tall outline of the Bull public house.
