A crash in the 1970's in Queens Road ,we think it is possibly no.30, Park Road can be seen in the background.Paul Barrell can be seen talking to his Uncle Les Kemble the builder.

I wonder who had to turn the winch handles ?

A large crane being delivered to James W Cooks shipyard for use on one of their newly built dredger.

Unfortunately it got stuck halfway down the hill, the road being unmade, you can see the two steel cables that were attached to the winch which was secured at the top of the hill.
The date must be around 1980.

I can just remember back that far.

Hilda,  Alf and Moira Antrim outside their shop in Queens Road in 1952. their shop was a general provision and green grocers.

We certainly had our fair share of celebs.

Captain William (Billy) Mason passed away in 1933 here he is seen second from left.  William was a skipper for many well known Men ,including the Duke of Leeds, Lord Abercorn and sir William Christie. He also toured the world with General Freemantle by yacht.
In later years he was also landlord of the Grosvenor Hotel on the corner of the High St. and Station road. He lived in Queens Road.

Also in Queens Road, Mrs Sarah Durrant Wife of Captain Durrant an old Mariner passed away in 1936.Queens road seems to have been full of Mariners!

Just around the corner in Park Road Mr John Hughes Jones, actor lived at Abbotsbury, Park Road, he was a Shakespearean actor who appeared in principal London theaters. He passed away in 1934.

The new Wivenhoe waterworks pumping station-looking at it's new condition it must have been built around 1900. It pumped water to the Water tower at the Cross which opened in 1902.

The white wall is at the bottom of Queens road, the meadow in front of the wall ,we used to call it Bobbits field, now Dene park Estate.

Before this new pumping station, water for the bottom of the village was gathered from the brook at the bottom of Queens Road.
