A Wivenhoe Man who fought at the battle of Trafalgar and is buried in Wivenhoe churchyard.

One of the famous Green family.

James Samuel Green of Wivenhoe ,youngest petty officer in the Royal Navy , married to Miss Dora Wilson at Greenhithe ,Kent.  James served on the warship Edward V11.

Edward James Hill, Baron Hill of Wivenhoe died December 14th 1969. He lived in Clifton terrace,Wivenhoe,Essex.

Edward james Hill of Wivenhoe also went by the nickname of Lord Ted".  He was created Baron Hill of Wivenhoe, of Wivenhoe in the County of Essex(U.K. life peer) on the 21st of September 1967.

     Edward James Hill, Baron Hill of Wivenhoe was born on 20 August 1899.² He was the son of James EdwardHill.² He married, firstly, Ethel Kate Bohea in 1925 at Romford, Essex, England.^2,3 He married, secondly, HannahRosen in 1960.² He died on 14 December 1969 at age 70.¹
      Edward James Hill, Baron Hill of Wivenhoe also went by the nick-name of Ted.¹ He was educated at Napier Road School, East Ham, Essex, England.² He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, with Royal Marines Engineers.² He was General Secretary of the United Society of Boilermakers between 1948 and 1963.² He was member of the General Council, Trades Union Congress between 1948 and 1965.² He was President of the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers between 1963 and 1965.²He was created Baron Hill of Wivenhoe, of Wivenhoe in the County of Essex [U.K. Life Peer] on 21 September 1967.¹

  Lord Hill, as General Secretary of the Boiler Makers Union, wanted to live near the boilers makers. He knew Jim Gould, and his older brother Arthur who were both boiler makers/platers, and Jim persuaded him to move to Wivenhoe. “Ted Hill purchased a cottage near to Jim’s so he could live in Wivenhoe with the boilermakers.” Jim lived at Cornwall Villas, Clifton Terrace. In a slight twist of fate both Jim and Lord Hill died  in the 3rd quarter of 1967. I believe Arthur and Jim worked at Davy Paxman in Colchester.

George Henry Cook 1857-1914. Born Wivenhoe.
George started hid career as a rope maker aged 13and then progressed to master mariner.

1872- ship Sovereign listed as boy aged 14.
1874 ship Earnest he is listed as ordinary seaman aged 16 ex Speedwell his pay was £1-15s.per month
1876 ship Era  Master Charles Turner of Wivenhoe George is now listed as an able seaman aged 21.
1877  ship Jullanar, pleasure yacht, master John Downes of Brightlingsea, George aged 21 able seaman.
1879  Rosabelle master Henry Harlow Wivenhoe, George cook aged 24 able seaman.
1880  Rosabelle master as before and George is now paid £1/15s. per week and 2/-bonus conduct money
1914 Ship SS Lindale, George is now aged 50 and ab seaman.   George died  whilst loading sulphuric acid  .He was overcome by the fumes, he died in the hospital in Antwerp Belgium.
Sovereign was registered in Colchester she was a 156 ton schooner belonging to W.J. Girling of West Bergholt.
Earnest was registered in Colchester and 154 tons. she was wrecked in 1880.
Era registered in Colchester, she was a 175 schooner and owned by J.G. Chamberlain of Wivenhoe.
George was also on the Havelock  registered in Colchester ,she was a 144ton brigantine.  George's half brother Samuel Ridgley Cook was lost at sea when the Havelock was wrecked ,he was aged 16  in 1881.
Rosabelle built in 1875 at Wivenhoe , probably Harveys yard  and owned by Theodore Pim as a yawl.
P.S. the relatives of Capt. George Cook aged 56 years received the sad news of his death in Antwerp.
he was engaged on the SS. Lindale plying between Antwerp and London. Deceased leaves a widow and 6 sons and 3 daughters. The 2 eldest sons George and Stanley left for the funeral yesterday.
George was buried at the Kiel cemetery row 13 number 29.

Old George

The Shipwright Arms gave up on Thursday night.  George Hillyard, :Old George: had been there for 52years, save for a break of 8 years after his wife died/. at the age of 12 he was working in the Rowhedge shipyard and at 19 he sailed with the American yacht Margarita in Scotland.  The yacht was caught in the Mediterranean when the American-Spanish war broke out.  It ran the gauntlet of the Spanish blockade.

The Harvey's were ship builders and mariners.

William harvey of Wivenhoe, gained his Master's certificate fo the merchant navy in 1892 from the board of trade.

We breed them well in Wivenhoe.

French bravery Medal awarded to Robert Cross of Wivenhoe .

The marine Minister decrees that on the 30th of April 1905, on behalf of the French President, the bronze sauvetage medal be awarded to Robert Cross, sailor on the American steamship Venetia who assisted in the rescue, on 14th of Febuary 1905, of the french vessel Saint Anoine de pixdoue in distress six miles from Au Large de Bougie..

Arthur Shead from Wivenhoe, he lived at 19 Manor road with his wife Gertrude and four daughters.
He served on the Rannock and the Marion.

I am not sure who is on this photo, in fact i don't know anything to put on this one. i am sure someone will tell me. i think there are some Scofield's and Bill Clark on there some where,also it might be about 1937's Is that Harold Green with the glasses in the back row?

Another Wivenhoe person of note.

Captain Mathew Martin of Wivenhoe Mansion House and later of Alresford Hall which he bought in, his 1720 he died in 1749, his Daughter married Isaac Lemying Rebow of Wivenhoe Park. Mathew was a commander for the East India Company. it is thought the Wivenhoe mansion house was on the site of the Railway station.
