Love Lane, now East Sreet.


East Street at the turn of the century. The old cottages on the left were demolished, and now the Fish and Chip shop has replaced them. the big house on the far left was the home of Philip Havens.

James (Friday) Green. Captain of the Smack Elise,and crewman on the giant J class yachts, Family relatives still live in Wivenhoe.. He was nicknamed Friday because he would not put to sea on a Friday, they were all superstitious.

We are all waiting for the sprat boats to come in

Captains Row. These cottages are on the left side of Anglesea Road, so called because most of the occupants were connected with fishing or sailing, and they had a very good view of the river colne

Flour for our bread.

Wivenhoe Windmill. The Windmill's last owner was Charles Mortlock(1835-1887).
The mill was converted to steam after a fire destroyed much of the original Windmill.
The business flourished until the 1940's.
The mill was situated on the corner of Belle Vue Road and Rectory Road.

The Man in the iron mask

Harry Bensley, the man in the iron mask. He took on this wager to walk around the world wearing an iron mask from a group of Gentlemen at a London Club, but his adventure was interrupted by WW1.

Harry Bensley was a wivenhoe councillor 1931-  1935, but because of ill health he retired to Surrey.

It was cold in 1963.

The big freeze of 1963, when the river Colne froze over, the Army were called in to blow up the ice near Rowhedge docks to enable ships to be released down river.

A place of worship

Wivenhoe Congregational Church, opened in 1847,it closed in 1961.

The Church was built by money donated by Thomas Sandford of Wivenhoe , Oyster Merchant.

Nobody told me it was this rough!

RYS Britannia. Here seen racing at Cowes, circa 1920 This was King George 5th's Yacht. Seated right of the wheel is her Captain, Albert Turner.

Amazing picture. Turner was my great grandfather but I know very little about him. My brother searched his name and found this page. Where did you find the picture?

Wivenhoe built craft

Motor torpedo boat built at Vospers yard at Wivenhoe Essex, 1939-1945.  Here it is seen on trials off the Essex Coast, these craft were capable of speeds in excess of  30 knots. vosper's moved here from the South coast during the war because of the bombing of their yard.

Mr Payne's Dairy was in East St. Wivenhoe.  Date of the photo. is unknown.

Garrison House

The Old Garrison House in East Street, built 1678. The front shows ornate plaster work called pargetting.
It is thought to have been a Merchants house, with storage on the ground floor and living accommodation on the first floor.

The Wivenhoe Rope Works

The Rope Works Situated at Wivenhoe Cross.  There has been a Rope Works on this site since the 1700's.

The last owner was William Browne.

Walking the plank

This picture of Wivenhoe Quay was taken around 1903. The view is looking towards Alresford

The Nook.

The Nook was situated on the Corner of Park Road and Belle Vue Road. it could have possibly stood on the site of Wivenhoe park House, which was owned by William Brummell, the brother of Beau Brummell. This photo. shows Alexandre Trotter, Shipbuilder at Wivenhoe, and his Family, 1891.

Just the place for a beer

The Park Hotel.  Situated at the top of hte High Street, built circa 1900 on land that was part of the Wivenhoe Park estate

Who stole the tiles off of my roof

Mapel Cottages, built circa 1722 on the Quay at Wivenhoe,after the 1884 Earthquake.
They still retain much of their original features.

Park Road



Park road was named after Wivenhoe Park, once the residence of William Brummell, Brother of Beau Brummell.  The area enclosed land from Belle Vue Rd. to the Bottom of Brook St.

There were no cars here in 1903
