Many Wivenhoe men joined up here.

The Army recruitment office in the High St. next to the hairdressers.  This was used by the Essex Regiment in 1914.

Hi
I am writing a book about a young lad called Clive Smith from Leyton who as a child went on regular camps at Wivenhoe with the sea scout movement. He later became a member of the crew of the Royal yacht Bluebottle. As a boy Clive befriended a man called Captain Rex Gifford who I know was an International secretary of the YMCA and founder of TS Warfleet training school in Dartmouth. Gifford owned a large wooden yacht called Polaris which he moored at Wivenhoe. Gifford also owned a boat called Silver Foam which was chosen for him by Vince. It would appear Vince became a skipper for Gifford but I have few details to support this. It was also suggested the Clive joined the Wivenhoe Sailing club, perhaps on Gifford or Vince's suggestion but again I have no proof of any of that. Anything that you could give me to add provenance to these suggestions would be fantastic.
